Can I interrupt enemy attacks?

Actions that inflict Silence or Stun effects can interrupt enemy attacks.

Using Silence to Interrupt Enemies

You can determine whether Silence will be effective on an enemy by the color of their progress bar. A glowing red bar indicates that actions with silencing effects such as Interject (for Tanks) or Head Graze (for Physical Ranged DPS) may interrupt that attack. The word "Interrupted!" will be displayed upon success.

Using Stun to Interrupt Enemies

Actions such as Low Blow (for Tanks) or Leg Sweep (for Physical Ranged DPS) inflict a stun effect, which hinders an enemy's movement in its entirety. Therefore, excluding cases of innate resistance, any enemy action may be interrupted with Stun, regardless of the progress bar's color.

Please be aware that an enemy's innate Stun resistance is not displayed. Additionally, each time an enemy is stunned, they will take less time to recover, ultimately gaining temporary immunity to the effect should it be used in excess.

In conclusion, staying aware of an enemy's progress bar and learning what actions are effective against a given foe will allow you to interrupt enemy attacks. Customize how the progress bar is displayed by selecting "HUD Layout" via the System menu, and review the Job Guide to learn more about action effects.
