容姿：1000の頭（一般的には七頭）と2000の舌を持つ大蛇、その首はコブラに似ている

神格化された大地の宝の番をする強大な蛇。
または世界の終わりと始まりに現れるナーガの王であり地下の国の王である。
一般的にはシェーシャと呼ばれる。
千の頭を持つと言われるが絵に描かれる場合は七頭が多い。
世界が始まる前、そこには果てしなく続く乳海があるだけであった。
そこにいるのはアナンタとその上にヴィシュヌ。
創造神ヴィシュヌが世界創造の合間に休むとき、アナンタの頭部を日除けに用いた。
また世界の終わりでもヴィシュヌはアナンタの上に寝転び破壊の瞑想をする。
現在は世界を支えるものとも、七地獄を持ち上げるとも言われる。
地震は大地を支えているアナンタがあくびをしたせいだとされる。
