Growing up in the T tribe of the Miqo'te, situated in the mountains on the border of Coerthas and The Black Shroud, T'aiyo was always expected to take the position of one of the tribe's Nunh. He and the other Tia had their training and progress closely monitored by the tribe's Council of Elders, with T'aiyo's natural talents for a variety of different things catching their eye.
When the Seventh Umbral Calamity hit, the T tribe was greatly impacted. Their territory was reshaped, their villages were decimated, and many of their people died. Among these casualties was the tribe's primary Nunh. T'aiyo was considered to be the first in line, but he feared the level of responsibility that came with the position, essentially being the father of the entire tribe. As a result, he fled in the middle of the night, traveling with a trade caravan for a little while before finding himself in Gridania.
During these travels, he took note of the fact that the men of other cultures were allowed to have their own last names just like the women were. Seeking to leave behind the tia-nunh system, he decided to take the name of his mother, T'miora, as his own last name.
