Starlight Miracles

Public
I'm taking a break. Yeah, that's right, the famous Warrior of Light is officially on sabbatical. Adventuring and saving the world is fun and all, but after going to the literal end of the known universe, stopping every future calamity ever, and almost dying while doing so, you kinda just wanna take it slow for a while, let your injuries heal and spend time with your loved ones.

So I'm doing something you'd never expect the Warrior of Light to do. I'm currently on a business trip with Aymeric to Gridania.

He said he'd completely understand if I didn't want to go with him. But I did. Since he's always too busy to go on my grand adventures with me, and I've had too many near-death experiences whilst far away from him to count, I realized I want to spend as much time with him as possible, even if it means waiting around Gridania for hours by myself as he attends boring meeting after boring meeting, or worse, actually be invited to the boring meetings.

I'm joking, of course. I don't mind political meetings, even if I do tend to space out and fall asleep a lot. And I wanted to see my dear friend Kan-E-Senna again, whom I hadn't seen since that business with Gleipnir.

But I was waiting around the ampitheatre in Old Gridania one day, as Aymeric was in one of the more secretive meetings I wasn't invited to, when I caught a glimpse of a reindeer, of all things. I mean yeah, it's currently the season of the Starlight festival, and I'm constantly bombarded with bright lights and mistletoe, but the reindeer I really wasn't expecting.

The reindeer was accompanied by a green-haired Viera man from Sharlayan. I almost ran away right then and there; I spent a lot of time in Sharlayan while trying to avert the Final Days, and came to despise the typical academian snobbery possessed by most of its citizens (I love you Alphinaud, please forgive me.), but I listened to his tale. He wanted to spread Starlight cheer to the children of Gridania as part of his research. I realized that's the kind of research project I can get behind.

As a child, I was a lonely orphan Au Ra living on the outskirts of Coerthas. If I had any happy Starlight memories, I've somehow forgotten about them. Maybe I got excited about getting a toy sword or a dress up doll from my emotionally distant foster parents, but that kind of joy was fleeting. As an adult, I've come to adore Starlight since I finally have a real family. By some miracle, during my darkest moment, I was granted unofficial asylum in Ishgard, taken in by Edmont de Fortemps, a man I consider to be the closest thing I have to a real father. Even his sons, whom I got off on a bad start with, are now my brothers. And of course, I grew extremely close to the Lord Commander of the Temple Knights, Aymeric de Borel during this time, and we eventually fell in love, and are still very much deeply in love.

And even though you're no longer with us, and your death still haunts me to this day, I will forever be grateful for all the time we spent together, Haurchefant.

Sorry, I'm getting too sentimental. But the point is, I think every child needs to experience magic and love during Starlight. So I was happy to help the scholarly Viera out. And it turns out he learned the most important lesson of them all; real holiday magic comes from the heart, not from the brain.

So yeah. The Warrior of Light is in Gridania, handing out magic and gifts to all the local children. No one will probably know it's me. I know I've become a rather public and legendary figure, I know, but... the real me remains somewhat hidden. The real Icipher Septim can get sentimental, and doesn't mind periods of boredom, and even prefers quiet moments with her loved ones to grand life-risking adventures.

Speaking of loved ones, this is where the real surprise of the story happens!

You'll never guess who I ran into while delivering gifts. Aymeric himself! Turns out, he wasn't in some super secret alliance meeting today, like I assumed. He agreed to help deliver Starlight gifts to the children independently from me! You wouldn't believe the looks on our faces when we ran into each other!

Aymeric is kind of like me, in the fact that there's a public perception of him that's very different from the person he actually is. Everyone sees him as a strong, stoic, even dour knight and politician, but he's extremely kind to everyone he meets, he's great with children and animals (he has a cat, you know), and he even has his vices (he consumes more sugar than anyone else I know). I've seen him overwork himself and break from the stress, but it's because he has such a big heart. He has so much love for Ishgard, and for his friends... and for me.

So for anyone who thinks the Speaker of the House of Lords, and Lord Commander of the Temple Knights, wouldn't want anything to do with making common children smile, you are completely wrong. And for anyone who thinks the Warrior of Light, Savior of Ishgard, Liberator of Ala Mhigo, Warrior of Darkness, and any other pointless title I may have, wouldn't want to do something as supposedly mundane as delivering Starlight cheer, you are also completely wrong.

And I can't wait for the rest of our little business trip.
