Long Lost Family

Public
Ravenna sidled up to the bar in the Forgotten Knight, gently pressing her way through the crowd. She took care to not to subject anyone to her sharp elbows, and smiled apologetically to anyone she inadvertently bumped. She savored a last swig of her tankard before plopping it with a thud on the wooden bar in front of Gibrillont. He raised his eyebrow at her, and she nodded firmly.

As she slid the empty mug toward him, she felt a slight press on her shoulder. Annoyed, Ravenna looked up, and saw hair near the color of her own dark red waves trickling down the shoulder of a man who stood about a foot taller than herself.
Amber eyes glanced at her through a curtain of near-sunset orange hair. “Excuse me,” rumbled the voice below the eyes. After a pause, the dark brows above said eyes narrowed and then blurted, “Miss, where are you from?”

Gibrillont slid a fresh tankard into Ravenna’s palm and shot her a querulous look. Ravenna shook her head, so slightly. Returning her gaze to her neighbor, she said “Here. Ishgard. I’m from here. What about you?”

The tall stranger pressed a lock of red hair behind his ear and sighed. He looked down at his apparently empty mug and slid it closer to the far side of the bar.
“Ala Mhigo,” he said, to the ceiling.

“Oh!” Ravenna exclaimed, hastily downing a sip from her refreshed mug. “I’m so sorry!”

A slow grin split the stranger’s face. Gibrillont eyed him warily and set a fresh mug in front of him. “I’m not,” he said, before wrapping his lips around the rim of the mug and taking a deep draw from it.

Ravenna clasped both sides of her mug, trying to pretend she was focused on the ale within.

A wisp of air crossed her shoulder as her neighbor tossed his head. “Ah, I’m sorry. You just look like one of my people.” He took another sip, then cut his eyes toward her slyly, looking for a reaction.

Ravenna paused mid-sip and looked up at him. “Who are your people?”

The stranger, unmoving, replied to the wall across from him, “Morningstars.”

Ravenna’s eyes went wide, and she took a step back from the bar. The stranger turned slightly toward her, then whipped his attention back at Gibrillont’s sudden move toward him. He held up his right hand for Girbillont to wait.
“Miss?” he asked Ravenna.

Ravenna glanced up at him, noted the quality of the interest glittering in his golden eyes, and replied “Yes.” She gulped down more of her ale. “Do you have a table?”

The stranger shrugged. “I do, yeah.”

Ravenna tossed back the rest of her pint and waved her hand at Gibrillont. She pointed at her mug, arched an eyebrow, and turned back to the stranger.

“I think we have something to talk about. May I join you?” she said to him.

“Of course,” he said, and waved his left arm to a table where a blonde Miqo’te woman waited at a table cluttered with empty mugs and bottles. “If you recognize my name, you are welcome to speak about it.”

Ravenna caught the new mug of ale in her cupped palm, nodded to Gibrillont, and said to the stranger, “Let’s talk.”

She turned her gaze in the direction the stranger had gestured and caught the attention of the blonde Miqo’te. The Miqo’te smiled and waved at her.

The stranger had collected his new mug and took a step toward the table. He noticed Ravenna waving and paused.

“Do you know Perjha – I mean C’perjha?” he inquired.

Ravenna nodded. “Yes! I do! Well … I mean as well as one can know anyone that one only sees in a tavern,” she retorted.

The stranger chucked. “For most purposes, that’s probably well enough. Well, come on then, have a seat,” he said with a gallant half-bow in C’perjha’s direction.

Ravenna snorted, plucked her mug off the bar, and strode toward her blonde friend.
