An Adventurer’s Record—The History of Allag

Public
When my duties for the Scions next allowed me time to return to the Crystal Tower, I found a camp full of disappointed men. While they had been readily consuming every bit of knowledge they could find within the Labyrinth, neither the Sons of Saint Coinach nor the other members of NOAH have been able to make progress into the structure proper. As with the barriers outside, the entry to the Tower was locked, and despite Raha’s profound expertise in Allagan mechanics and Cid’s technological wizardry, neither of them could figure out how to bypass it. We all were at a loss.
Just as I was prepared to leave—as Alphinaud’s twin Alisaie had recently asked for my help in another matter—we were approached by an interesting pair of individuals. They identified themselves as Unei and Doga, claiming to have been sent by the Students of Baldesion, as they were scholars of Allagan history like my brother. Rammbroes expressed his doubt at their identity, as he had heard nothing from the Students about receiving further aid. Doga brushed the suspicions aside, claiming that some mishap must have kept him from receiving the message.
Rammbroes and I glanced at each other uneasily, but before I could further express my doubts, Raha flinched, covering his eye with his hand. He recovered swiftly, claiming it to be a pain that subsided. That did nothing to ease my concern over him, and I determined then and there that no matter his protestations, he would not accompany me in the Tower until I was certain it was safe.
To all our shock, Unei claimed that she and Doga both had the Allagan eye, just like him. Raha implored them to tell him all they knew of the eye, as he had been seeking answers regarding it all his life. I almost joined in his begging, knowing how important it was to him, but Doga claimed to know no more of it than we, only that possessing the eye bound his fate to Allag, and for that reason, they were drawn to the Tower. Rammbroes hesitantly allowed them to join NOAH, and sent the four of us to join Cid at the entrance.
We found Cid standing before and enormous, ornate door, gold and glowing teal after the traditional Allagan style. He claimed that the means of opening the door continued to elude everyone, and it resisted even brute force. Raha considered the relief carved upon it to be a clue, apparently representing a man and woman of Allagan royalty.
You can only imagine our surprise when Unei and Doga opened the door by simply channeling their aether into it. But when Cid demanded answers from them, it came not from our new friends, but from Nero, who apparently had followed us. He proclaimed to now be considered a fugitive from Garlemald, so now explored Eorzea to see what interesting things he could discover. And the Crystal Tower was right up his alley. He readily proceeded to explain to us that the door was designed to only open for Allagan royalty, as Raha had surmised. He concluded that Unei and Doga were what he called “clones.” Allagan replications of their royalty. The pair confirmed Nero’s claims and explained all to us.
I should note that at this point, Nero stayed with us, forcing his way into our research, much to my chagrin, and Cid’s as well. As a “token of good faith” he gave Cid a tomestone that held all the information he just revealed to us. I hardly considered it fair trade for being forced to suffer his presence, but I had no real say in the matter.
Outside the Tower, the Allagan pair explained to us their origins and the history of the ancient empire, the power and pride that eventually led to the nation’s downfall. As Allag began to stagnate under its own prosperity, a man named Amon chose to revitalize it by attempting to resurrect the Empire’s founder, Emperor Xande. Amon invented cloning technology and recreated numerous copies of the original Unei and Doga. Eventually he succeeded in bringing back Xande, who brought the Empire back to the greatness it once knew.
The Emperor proved to be an ambitious man with his heart set on world conquest, and converted the Tower’s purpose to further this pursuit. His actions had even been the cause of the Fourth Umbral Calamity, the ultimate downfall of the Allagans. And the pair informed us that this resurrected Emperor continued to live, having been locked away in the Tower for millennia. Amon had slowed the flow of time within the Tower, placing all in a deep sleep until such a time as they would be reawakened—an event triggered by Dalamud’s fall.
Unei and Doga explained then that they had inherited the wills of their namesakes, their fate to be the cessation of Xande’s ambition. When they woke in the Tower five years past, they sought allies who could help them fulfill this mission, and had discovered them in us.
So our objective was changed. We were now determined to seal away the Crystal Tower and the secrets it held. And for my part, I was to enter and destroy all hostiles, including Emperor Xande…not a daunting prospect in the least.
As the others left to carry out their duties, Raha and I lingered with Unei and Doga. A look of trepidation filled my brother’s face, but Doga assured him that he was no clone, as they could not reproduce. He told us that the red eye was not merely an Allagan trait, but specifically a trait of the royal bloodline. As for why it ran in our veins, they could offer no explanation, only assure us that we would learn the truth in due time.
