Submarines where to start, firstly to unlock submarines you must have a free company, and a free company workshop. So your Free Company must be rank 6 and have a house and you must buy the workshop.
The first submarine build you will unlock is the shark build, and as the submarine levels up, you can equip higher level parts to the submarine. Higher level builds are unlocked through a number of items in the Free Company workshop
following is a list of materials you will need for each part of each build, and the quantity. I hope this is helpful in pre planning.
Now I believe that certain builds are more suitable than others for certain things, I always try to aim for a build with over 195 Surveillance as this is the minimum surveillance needed to hit all the loot tables in all sectors. Many sectors require less, but its probably better to aim to hit this stat requirement. So Ill quickly explain about the stats of a submarine. StatsSurveillance:
Influences the weather pattern encountered in a sector. Weather patterns affect loot tables and require specific minimum thresholds. Rarer loot requires better weather.Retrieval:
Influences the extraction rate (yield) of a dropped item (poor, normal, optimal).Speed:
Influences the duration of a voyage.Range:
Influences the maximum distance a ship may travel during a voyage.Favour:
Influences the number of anomalies detected at a single destination (referred to as "Double Dipping").
There are a few builds I would recommend, and I myself use, they each have their own purposes and uses. I have used the level 80 stats.[ C+ U+ U+ Y+ ] Modified Coelacanth-class pressure Hull - Modified Unkiu-class Stern - Modified Unkie-class Bow - Modified Syldra-class Bridge Surveillance - 225 Retrieval - 95 Speed - 110 Range - 140 Favour - 175
This Build I use for unlocking areas, its used at the very start of new submarine content, and when all areas are unlocked I swap the parts over. It is very good for unlocking areas. This is one of the main farming build I am using at the moment, it has more than enough surveillance and range to get to all areas, it also has 180 favour which is now recommended. This is the other main farming build I am using at the moment, it has more than enough surveillance and range to get to all areas, it has slightly more speed and more range than the other build it has 190 favour which is above the recommended, it dose have less retrieval than the other build though. The previous tier's premier double dipper. Packs more than enough Surveillance to find any item in current maps. Has more range than the previous build but is a decent bit slower. I am not a fan of this build I am mainly put off by the slowness compared to the previous build, in my opinion the previous build can do just as much, in a lesser amount of time. I personally have used this in the past, while I am levelling a submarine, its a good levelling build I think, but honestly as soon as my submarines hit 50 and I make the modified parts that I want for what ever build I am planning on making that submarine, I change them. This build dose not double dip, but at least you'll be able to find any item in current maps, it has low range but hits two sectors in roughly two days. Like I said a good levelling build mainly because its cheap and can still be used on current maps, I wouldn't permanently use this build though. As discussed before I was looking for a sub to farm nothing but Pure Titanium Ore and Cryptomeria Logs, the stats I needed were Surveillance, Retrieval, Favour at least they were in my opinion, and for this build this is all I concentrated on. Im very happy with the results the submarine works for its intended purpose. In my opinion Its a good Submarine to have while you are still modifying submarines, because it literally farms the most expensive raw materials that you will need. This is my Kamacite Farming build, its made for that purpose and only that purpose, its quick, its simple, and its efficient. This submarine is designed to Collect high-value items that are sold to vendors for raw gil. No market board needed, just a vendor. Again another submarine build that is designed to Collect high-value items that are sold to vendors for raw gil.

Submarines like Airships will need to be repaired, to repair submarines you will need an item called Magitek Repair Materials, these items can be crafted and require 1 Dark Matter Cluster and 5 Grade 6 Dark Matter to make 1 Magitek Repair Materials, I would advise making at least 50 to 100, as higher level parts require more Magitek Repair Materials to be repaired. I believe the modified parts require 6 Magitek Repair Materials per part.
