A casual scrub's raiding misadventures

I heard many things about Alphascape v2.0 (Savage), also known as O10S, before ever stepping into it. It is considered unusually tough for a 2nd boss, and the amount of salt it generated among Savage raiders is comparable to that created by Pagos among casual players. Players talked about the difficulty of clearing reliably, and some even claimed it was harder than the next boss, O11S. Will my journey come to an early end?

There's only one way to find out.

The leader of the learning party was a WAR, and there was a BRD in party when I joined. However, a bunch of players soon arrive and the party fills. From the way they talked to each other, I think they were a group of friends, and also knew the WAR party leader. They joke around with the kind of cheeky humor common among Savage raiders. SCH asks if anyone has questions, and the BRD says "Which one is star and which one is lar?" (Referring to mechanics in a different fight entirely, where players must quickly see if the boss is going to blast his starboard side or larboard side) SCH sasses him right back with "Star is forward and lar is backward," ahahaha.

We are assigned positions for mechanics, and the first pull goes off.

All my note taking and video watching did nothing to prepare me for the actual experience. In Savage, Midgardsormr has a nasty surprise for tanks. He will cast a spell called Time Immemorial, and randomly put 2 different buffs on the 2 tanks. Only one tank can safely tank Midgardsormr (if the tank with the wrong buff gets hit by Middy's autoattacks, they will get an uncleansable Doom and die after a few seconds). He also casts it several times, so the tanks must check to see who should be tanking, and swap accordingly.



I thought this would be the main difficulty of the fight for me, but surprisingly I handled it fairly well, and was always able to swap when needed. I also dealt with Midgardsormr's Tail End tankbuster (140k damage - the strongest tankbusters in casual content only deal around 90k) fairly well. Except for one time when I panicked and started mashing cooldowns, I think I always mitigated it properly.

On the other hand, I had the most difficulty with Midgardsormr's main gimmick, his spinning and flipping. In normal mode, flips and spins are not interrupted by mechanics. For example, he may do:

1) Spin
2) Flip
3) Mechanic

However in Savage, he instead does:

1) Spin
2) Mechanic
3) Flip

So if you are distracted by the mechanic and forget what he did before it, then when the flip comes, you will be hit. And this happened to me almost every time. At one point, I had 3 vuln up stacks on me when Midgardsormr started casting his tankbuster on me (luckily I cheated by using Hallowed Ground).



After several pulls, we are able to make it to the add phase with some mistakes, and clear it easily. It's clear that half the party (both healers, and 2 of the DPS) are very skilled raiders, because they pass all mechanics and die only due to other people's mistakes. The next phase, Hot Tail, does not appear in normal mode, and involves passing a buff around to mitigate Midgardsormr's attacks. I make a mistake and die during Hot Tail, along with 2 DPS and co-tank. I expect this will be a wipe and we can go back to clean up phase 1 and I can learn phase 2, or Hot Tail.

No, wait, the healers are raising. Exaflares go off. More people die, and healer LB3 goes off.

Phase 3 begins. Midgardsormr fires off Akh Morns, horrid roars and thunderstorms in rapid succession, and we duck and scatter. I fail another flip/spin combo. Luckily, Middy is merciful and decides he wants to continue chewing on my cotank, so my vuln stack is not an issue.

Akh Morn! Ice puddles! Exaflares! You know, the battles in Savage are simulations only, and are not real. But I feel that O10S is the true battle, the one that really happened. I can sense the Father of Dragons's cunning and arrogance as he kills us lesser beings with devious combinations of mechanics.

As for me, by now I'm in full on panic mode. I never expected that I would see phase 3, and am completely unprepared. I stand in the wrong position for Earthshakers because I am not expecting them, and kill 2 DPS with my mistake. And then the MT dies, leaving me with the wrong debuff to tank Midgardsormr. Do I provoke the boss and doom myself (literally), or let it chew on the DPS while the healers try to raise the MT?

I decide to take a chance and provoke as Midgardsormr starts to cast Time Immemorial again. But fate does not smile on me, and I am still given the wrong debuff for tanking him. But here I also make a serious mistake. I didn't notice that Hallowed Ground was available.



My moment of shame. I should have used Hallowed Ground and this would buy 10 more seconds for the raid to kill him. Unfortunately, I did not and Doom soon kills me.

OK, surely this will be the wipe? I look at the boss's HP bar.

Wait, 1%?!!



The boss dies. You can see the AST (who was very skilled) even went back to spamming Malefic while akh morn was going off, knowing they had healed enough that it would not kill the party. I admire their nerves of steel.

I sit in numb silence as I thank the party and apologize for my mistakes. To be honest, I got carried. I am very grateful to those really skilled raiders who came to help, but at the same time, part of me actually wished we didn't clear so that I could practice more. I haven't even mastered the first phase.

I didn't ask about my DPS because DPS is irrelevant when I cannot do mechanics or perform my role. But, after this experience, I can truly see why Savage raiders value DPS so highly. 4 very good players with a little help from Echo were able to carry 2 new tanks.

I technically "cleared", but I didn't earn this victory. Until I can perform all mechanics without error, I still consider myself as not having passed O10S and continue to look for learning parties. In the meantime, I'm going to "practice" all the flips and spins by watching videos of people's clears, predicting what to do next by looking at the tells, then seeing if I was correct.

Grats. I know this feeling so well. Unfortunately its my biggest bartier to any serious raiding (apart from available time) After wiping so many times on an intro boss. I spent days learning the fight. Then I went back in.. And still flubbed it up.

Congratulation. It sounds totally epic. Also, a clear at any condition is much better than wipe at 1%. You can always improve the more you do the fight. For the same effort, it is more uplifting to have a good end than a frustrating raid night.

My friend mentioned about this fight to me the other day, and told me people on PF often mess up the flip and spin... while I can't even remember what the fight is in normal mode ;p

The good news about the tail spins is during the first phase its always a set pattern. First is + or x. Second in or out, third is in or out, 4th is + or x, 5th in or out and 6th in or out. So once you get a ton of experience in the fight I know what tail is coming to determine which of the two and that is really all I pay attention to. Grats on the clear, get some practice in and on to Omega!

Oooh I relate so much. Way back when the first Extreme primals came out, I spent literally weeks shaping up to beat Titan and I would most of the time be able to stay alive the whole time.

Then at some point I joined a group, made a dumb mistake and died, and then... we cleared, while I watched the whole thing from my spot on the ground :C

You'll get better though, I believe in you!

Everyone, I really appreciate your thoughts, but please don't congratulate me. Nobody should congratulate one who got carried.

If the point of Savage is to be a challenge, and a journey to grow as a player, then I have not achieved the whole purpose of this content yet.

Felsea I am definitely staying clear of any farm parties! We can't go and ruin people's farm. I will practice hard and clear it properly and... I'm never doing this fight again, ahaha.

Sigurd, I spent a lot of time thinking about what you said. Perhaps I'm being ungrateful, but part of me still feels that I lost some of the magic of a first clear in the process.

I also strongly prefer not to be carried. After all, in a team game the fun comes from working together with others. But perhaps all of this is just pride speaking.

Mahdi I did not look in the chest. I would like to say I made some kind of principled decision (I got carried so should not roll on loot), but I was just stunned by the outcome and left in a daze.

Thanks Linkey and Alestrae. Mistakes are still fairly common in Savage from my experience (parties may take 2-4 pulls to clear), and it feels horrible when it is your mistake that wipes the team. Perhaps part of Savage's challenge is the mental toughness to withstand such setbacks and perform.

Panda, thanks very much for your tips. After revising my notes and recording of the fight I also realized that you can tell what comes next from the mechanic. Thunderstorm always comes with + or x, and Earthshakers always come with circle or donut, so just looking at the 2nd flip and the mechanic on you is enough to determine the result of the spin/flips. This actually helps a lot, thanks.

That's harsh Lalli! I have heard how Titan EX was a major obstacle to players upon release, so mad props for being one of those who fought it synced.

Rationally, even though it seems like getting the same loot for less effort, the party clearing with you dead always feels bad. I must try harder to play my part in the next clear party!

Siglinde, I should give you some context :) So the British have two talents, self deprecation and make light of all misfortune around them. The latter comes with the saying "worse happen at the sea" (what just happen are not as bad). It helps us to endure constant late running train, bad cooking, stupid politicians and a football team always lose to penalties (and a lot more). I instinctively look for silver linings, even if it was clear that your objective was not clear the fight at any cost.

Side note: my ex-FC master is a stern face German woman who went totally nuts with my ability to turn the worst tragedy into humour. Worse, I worked extra hard to keep the joke up hoping that she would loosen up.
