Never Piano! -- Part 0

Never Piano!

Part 0 -- Just Who Is Your Mom?

It was back then when I was 9 year old. I had a classmate, a Chinese girl, who started playing piano at very young age. If my memory serves, she had already passed grade 8 exam at the age of 8. Of course, I had no idea back then what grade 8 even means. Now I know it is the highest grade under ABRSM exams.

In one of our regular lesson, we were told to write a short essay about our mothers. There is nothing particular fancy about a “short essay” written by a 9 year old. It was merely a few paragraphs of incoherent sentences of my mom takes me to the park and cooks for me, etc, with loads of spelling mistakes.

One thing was different. That girl didn’t write about her mother in her essay. Instead, she wrote about her piano teacher.

“Wait, so your piano teacher is your mom?” Our teacher asked.

“No, she isn’t.” The girl said.

“Then why do you write about your piano teacher? The topic of this essay is ‘My Mother’.”

The Chinese girl slowly looked away and said, “I practised at least four hours every day. I hardly ever see my mom. I really don’t have much memory of her. On the other hand, I spend a lot of time with my piano teacher and have things I can talk about.”

This is one of my first memories about music as a child: learning musical instrument means you have to practise 4 hours a day and won’t get to see your mom again.

Some years later, my parents jokingly asked if I want to learn to play the piano. It felt like I had done something wrong and they were putting me up for adoption.

No. Never piano.

Some years later when I was a teen, I did end up in trying out some musical instruments. It never lasts more than couple months, until many many years later.

The story starts about a year after Stormblood released. I had unsubbed FFXIV for about a year. At that time, I signed up for a violin lesson.

Working where I am, I've seen instances like this a few times. The two sides of this argument are.. Don't push your children and on the other. Whatever happens later, she can still play the piano to a professional standard.

Lalli, Thanks! I hope this story series will be interesting, although it will be a bit plain compare to my game adventure... After all, it is real life.

Fineira, I think for some families, they trained their kids in music very hard when they were young. If they make it to Carnegie hall by say age of 10, they become professional musician. Or else, the family gets their kids to aim for doctor, lawyer type of job.

i tell my students to practice 30 mins a day.....no wonder none have reached Carnegie hall status XD

Mahdi, I haven't even been to Carnegie hall as an audience ;p

I practise more than 30 minutes per day, but often I have the YouTube on.

Nice slice of Real Life Sigurd.

FOUR hours at NINE years old, poor kid.

That's REALLY sad that her mother did not think she was worth her time to spend actual time with her. Just get good so she can show her off to her friends. "See how good my daughter is?"

You know, I wonder if she actually got any enjoyment out of piano. When I did ballroom dancing, I would see Asians dance. They were always trying to be so technically perfect they NEVER looked like they were actually enjoying the dancing.

Annabel, I think there is a very famous pianist called Lang Lang. By the age of 5, his father scheduled his entire day, so he can practise 6 hours a day

I wonder if a 5 years old know this is not fun, especially if this is the only thing he got exposed to growing up. In the end, what is this all for? Are they cultivating an interest, or just a sense of excellence? The latter is not necessarily evil. But what if you grow up thinking you can't have fun at something unless you are very good at it?
