So since this is a continuing problem for many players, and the official article that I found for cancelling subscriptions written by SE is entirely wrong and "tricks" you into deleting your service account (more than likely a translation error there), here is how to cancel your subscription payments and not your entire account:
First, you must log into the Mogstation and go to "
Your Account."
Then, under "
Service Account Status," you must choose "
Cancel Subscription." This will take you through the process of stopping automatic payments, and will leave your account the way it was the last time you saw it. You will be able to access your account for the remaining that time you have already purchased, but after that you will no longer be able to log in until the next payment that you make.
Do
NOT choose "Cancel Service Account"!!! This will delete your characters from your servers, and delete the game serial numbers from your account. If you choose this option, you
WILL have to repurchase FFXIV (and expansions) and start completely over from scratch with a brand-new character. This option is there so that you can clear your data from SE's servers if you are never going to play again to help them avoid data clutter. Please please please be sure to select the correct option when trying to stop subscription payments!
I can vouch for this process, since I've had to use it myself. Hope this helps some of you out there before an irreversible mistake happens! Happy gaming!

Good write up.
Although i'm baffled people can mess this up and cancel their account.
All one needs to do is actually read. I have had a XI account, and a XIV account (obviously) and stopped and restared, and even activated all accounts and characters without a single bit of confusion or errors arising.
I just dont get how people mess up in any way shape form or fashion.
Part of the problem arises from a combo of bad instructional design on the part of SE and bad interpretation of terms on the part of the user. To be fair, good instructional design dictates that using "Cancel Service Account" and "Cancel Subscription" is poor design and will cause obvious problems since they share a term for two completely different services. Users are more than likely reading "Cancel Service" and interpreting that as subscription before they ever even read the second button.
Clearer terminology as dictated by good instructional design would reword the buttons to read "Delete My Account & Characters" versus "Cancel Subscription Payments." Delete and cancel are the degree of severity and make it much plainer that these are two different services, not two buttons that take you to the same service. (We've all run into that kind of programming so it's not unfair to assume the user assumed they were both going to the same page.)

let’s say you cancel in the middle of having certain days left. like you have 26 days left and you cancel. do you still play those 26 days till it’s over or does it change it to 0 since you cancelled it?
It gives you a warning before confirming.
so i cant do this when i still have days left from my 30 days from starter edition
Today id bought the shadowbringers dlc, but by error I registered to service account 1, which is inactive. How can I transfer the expansios to my active account service? Deleting the service that has the expansion reset it?

Wrong and terrible info .cancel service account does not remove your character neither it removes your cd keys .you can always get it back by asking support to reactivate your account .
